Schembechler remembered

Former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler was remembered with a moment of silence during Saturday’s Michigan-Ohio State game in Columbus, Ohio. Here is the introduction read at Ohio Stadium:

“Please stand for a moment of silence in memory of, and in tribute to, former Michigan head football coach Bo Schembechler, who passed away yesterday morning:

“Bo was born in Barberton and played for and graduated from Miami of Ohio. He earned his master’s degree from the Ohio State University and later served four years as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes on Woody Hayes’ staff.

“Bo became the head football coach at the University of Michigan in 1969 and when he retired in 1989, he had led his teams to 13 Big Ten championships and was the winningest coach in school history.

“Bo was more than a coach. He was a mentor and friend to the hundreds of young men whose lives he touched.

“Michigan has lost a coach and patriarch. The Big Ten has lost a legend and icon. Ohio State has lost an alumnus and friend. The Schembechler family has lost a beloved father, grandfather and husband.

“Bo made the game of football better in every way. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone who mourns his passing.”

Paterno on standby

Joe Paterno watched from the press box at State College, Pa., in his first trip back to Beaver Stadium since breaking his left leg.

Television cameras often showed Paterno leaning close to the press box window, looking pensive as the Nittany Lions played Michigan State.

Transported in a gray van that was guided by a police escort, Paterno arrived at the stadium about 10 minutes before kickoff to a bevy of cheering fans waiting behind ropes.

Paterno had surgery to repair a shinbone and two knee ligaments in his left leg after getting leveled by two players during a sideline collision on Nov. 4 at Wisconsin. He missed last week’s game against Temple – his first absence from the sidelines as a head coach since 1977.

Fan dies, others injured

One person was killed and another critically injured in an accident involving a bus carrying Kansas State University fans to a football game at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

The one-vehicle accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. less than two miles from Memorial Stadium.

Few details were available by late afternoon, and police would not identify the dead and injured except to say both were male.
