Ferris, Mead 1-3 at Stanford

It was a big day for area cross country teams, led by the Ferris High School boys cross country team, ranked No. 2 in the nation, besting top-ranked Royal of California at the Stanford (Calif.) Invitational’s premier race for seeded teams Saturday. Mead, ranked sixth, took third place.

David Hickerson of Ferris finished fourth to lead the Saxons effort with a time of 15 minutes, 10 seconds over the 5,000-meter course run at the Stanford Golf Course.

“We knew Royal was going to be there,” said Ferris coach Mike Hadway. “But we said we can beat those guys if we just put it together. We ran as a good pack.”

There was only a 42-second difference between the Saxons’ first- and fifth-place runners: Hickerson, Cameron Quackenbush, Steve Olsen, Nick LaPlante and Pat Maloney, respectively.

Mead was paced by the eighth- and ninth-place finishes of Dylan Hatcher and Kelly Lynch, with Kelvin Daratha, Ryan Bishop and Jordan Curnutt rounding out the Panthers’ scoring five.

Mt. Spokane’s girls competed in the girls seeded race and finished 12th out of 24 teams led by Courtney Zalud’s time of 18:34 over 5,000.

Also Saturday, Central Valley’s boys won the team title at the Sunfair Invitational in Yakima, where more than 100 boys and girls teams were entered. The Bears runners won five of the seven varsity flights. Locally, West Valley’s boys and Cheney’s girls won at the Runner’s Soul Spokane Valley Classic. (Prep roundup, C2).

658 yards not enough for record

Paul McCoy ran for 658 yards in a West Virginia high school football game and may not have set a national record with his feat.

The total tops the National Federation of State High School Association’s listed record of 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. But high school records historian Doug Huff said the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., in 1950, against Mountain Lakes.

McCoy piled up his yardage on just 29 carries – an average of 22.7 yards per attempt – and scored 10 touchdowns as Matewan beat Burch 64-0 Friday.
