Overtime extravaganza

Denis Hopovac’s fifth field goal of the game in an NCAA record-tying seventh overtime gave North Texas a 25-22 victory over Florida International in Denton, Texas.

Hopovac connected from 34 yards after he and Florida International counterpart Dustin Rivest each missed four field goals in overtime. Hopovac also tied an NCAA record with nine attempts.

North Texas entered the game as the only Division I-A team that hadn’t played an overtime game since the NCAA instituted the rule in 1996. The other two seven-overtime games involved Arkansas – against Mississippi in 2001 and Georgia in 2003.

Super skids

No. 12 Notre Dame sent Stanford to its sixth straight loss and worst start in more than 20 years with a 31-10 win over the Cardinal. Stanford also lost its first six games in 1983, en route to a 1-10 season. … Colorado matched its longest skid in school history with its 10th straight defeat, a 34-31 triple overtime loss to Baylor. The Buffs need a win next week against Texas Tech to avoid breaking the mark first set in 1963-64. … San Diego State matched its worst start in school history with a 47-17 loss to Brigham Young. The Aztecs also started 0-5 in 2002.

Temple of doom

Temple dropped its 18th consecutive game – the longest streak in the nation – with a 28-17 loss to Kent State. The Owls scored on their first possession to gain the lead for the first time this season. The last time they had led was a 7-0 advantage against Maryland on Oct. 8, 2005.

Armed and dangerous

Army beat VMI 62-7 for its highest-scoring game in 48 years. The Black Knights last scored more than 60 points in 1958, when they beat Colgate 68-6. … Navy took its first step toward retaining the Commander-in-Chief Trophy with a 24-17 victory over Air Force. The Midshipmen have won the trophy, given annually to the best of the three service academies, three straight times.

Baby-back brawl

UAB beat Memphis 35-29 to win the inaugural “Battle of the Bones” and a 100-pound bronze rack of ribs – a trophy in honor of the reputations the two cities have for serving tasty barbecue.

Running wild

Justise Hairston of Central Connecticut set a school record with 332 yards rushing and tied a Blue Devils mark with five touchdown runs in a 62-21 rout of St. Francis, Pa.
