Cougars win pair in Texas

Freshman Jackie Albright had a match-high 17 kills to lead the Washington State volleyball team in a sweep over Louisiana-Lafayette in the second round of the Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational tournament in Arlington, Texas, on Friday.

The 30-20, 30-28, 30-22 win boosted the Cougars’ record to 9-1, equaling the number of wins they accumulated during the entire 2005 season.

Albright hit .469 for the match and WSU was also aided by Kelly Rosin’s 14 kills and Kelly Hyder’s match-high 15 digs.

In the opening round, the Cougars used match highs of 17 kills from Brittany Johnson and 35 assists from Corina Beyer to defeat Duquense 30-24, 30-22, 30-27.

Kelly Hyder and Stephanie Weishaar contributed 16 and 13 digs, respectively.

•Becky Jones collected her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 20 digs and 10 kills, helping Gonzaga in a 30-27, 30-24, 30-27 sweep of Maryland-Baltimore County in the opening round of the Husky Classic at Seattle.

Elania Renius added 14 kills and Heather Dunn scattered the stat line for the Bulldogs (3-5) with six kills, four digs, three blocks and 42 assists.

•Freshman libero Tamari Miyashiro led fifth-ranked Washington to a pair of sweeps at the Husky Classic.

Miyashiro collected 36 digs on the day to anchor a defense that held opponents to a .039 hitting percentage.

The Huskies (7-1) swept Maryland-Baltimore County in the opener and capped off the night with a sweep of North Dakota State.

•Idaho fell in three straight games to Saint Mary’s (Calif.) at the Long Beach Tournament in California.

Erin Curtis led the Vandals (0-7) hitting .385 with six kills, while Kelsey James had 14 assists and five digs.

•Community Colleges of Spokane went 3-0 during the first day of the Inland Northwest Communications Invitational at Spokane Falls CC.

In the first match, CCS defeated Tacoma 30-10, 30-24, 30-24 behind Cassie Duncan’s eight kills and match-high 10 kills.

After a five-match win over Clackamas, the Sasquatch (3-1, 0-1) concluded the day in a four-game win over Lower Columbia, with Brandy Sonderland’s 13 kills leading the way.

•North Idaho went 2-0 during the day at the INWC Invite with wins over Blue Mountain and Big Bend.

Men’s soccer

Junior George Josten scored two goals and added an assist to lift Gonzaga in a 3-0 blanking of Xavier at the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore.

Tye Perdido also scored for the Bulldogs (2-2-1), who were outshot 13-7.

Women’s soccer

Kiersten Dallstream scored her first collegiate goal but it wasn’t enough as Washington State dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Nevada in Pullman.

Carly Dobratz recorded an assist for the Cougars (2-2-1), who fell behind 2-0 after 28 minutes and couldn’t catch up.

•Sophomore London King scored the lone goal as Gonzaga fell to Arizona 1-0 at the Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

•Sacramento State ruined Idaho’s home opener with four second half goals in a 6-0 win at Moscow, Idaho.

The loss was the worst for the Vandals (0-5-0) since 2003. Idaho has yet to score a goal this season.

•Melissa Guthrie scored two goals in the final 16 minutes, but Eastern Washington fell to Boise State 4-3 in overtime at Cheney.

Freshman Brittney Sparks also scored for the Eagles (1-4), who lost when Kaylea Pereno scored for the Broncos in the sixth minute of overtime.

•McKenzie Favero, Megan Wells and Kim Pearce scored, giving North Idaho a 3-1 win over the Eastern Washington reserves in Cheney.
