Cougs take two, win tournament
Adetokunbo Faleti had 31 kills on the day as Washington State won both of its volleyball matches Saturday to win the Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational at Arlington, Texas.
In the first match, Kelly Rosin and Brittany Johnson combined for 31 kills as Washington State beat Tulsa 30-22, 30-28, 30-13. Corina Beyer added 52 assists for the Cougars.
Faleti led the way in the second match with 19 kills as the Cougars beat Texas-Arlington 30-22, 30-24, 30-26 for the championship. Rosin chipped in with 13 kills and Beyer contributed 47 assists.
Washington State (11-1) went undefeated in four matches at the tournament and extended its winning streak to eight.
•After winning the first two games of the match, Gonzaga lost a 3-2 (29-31, 27-30, 30-26, 30-27, 15-9) decision to North Dakota State at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington. Becky Jones led the Bulldogs with 20 kills and Heather Dunn added 62 assists.
In their second match, Gonzaga lost to tournament host Washington 30-22, 30-18, 30-21. Christal Morrison led the Huskies with 17 kills and Courtney Thompson chipped in 51 assists. Becky Jones had 17 kills for the Bulldogs.
•Idaho lost to host Long Beach State 30-23, 30-19, 30-15 at the Long Beach State Invitational in California. Alexis Crimes had 15 kills and two aces for the 49ers while redshirt freshman Debbie Pederson led the Vandals with six kills.
•North Idaho College finished 6-0 at the Inland Northwest Communications Invitational at Spokane Falls Community College while the Community Colleges of Spokane finished 5-1.
In North Idaho’s 30-15, 30-19, 30-20 win over CC Spokane, Konae Purcell and Cintia Alessi combined for 24 kills and Lauren Stern added a team-high 33 assists for the Cardinals. Meagan Stanley, Cassie Duncan and Ashlee Lupfur had five kills each for CCS.
Men’s soccer
Kossivi Alokpovi had two goals to lead Concordia to a 3-0 win over Whitworth at the Clan Invitational in Burnaby, British Columbia. Concordia outshot Whitworth 17-10.
Women’s soccer
Kara Tisthammer scored a goal in the 13th minute and Whitney Ramsey added one as Whitworth beat visiting Northwest Nazarene 2-0 in a non-conference match. The Pirates outshot the Crusaders 20-1.
Junior hockey
Brett Bjorkman had a hat trick as Columbia Valley beat the Spokane Braves 5-2 in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.
