‘Climate change’ focus of Whitworth talk

Whitworth College is presenting “A Christian Response to Climate Change” today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre of Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

Speakers include Peter Illyn, the founder and director of Restoring Eden; Bill Robinson, the president of Whitworth College; and Tom Ackerman of the University of Washington and an expert on the science of climate change.

“The Rev. Jan Linn will give several talks on Monday and Tuesday.

Linn is the author of “Big Christianity: What is Right with the Christian Left” and is a co-pastor of Spirit of Joy Christian Church in Lakeville, Minn.

On Monday, he will speak on the topic “Christianity and the State: A New Perspective” from noon to 1 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya St.

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., is hosting a series of financial workshops from 1 to 3 p.m.

The first workshop is today and will discuss retirement community choices.

Next Thursday, a financial expert from Group Northwest will speak about long-term care insurance.

The last workshop, Sept. 28, will feature elder law specialists, Richard and Karen Sayre.

“Whitworth College is presenting “Challenges and Opportunities in Creating Shalom Community,” with Mary Nelson, the president emeritus at Bethel New Life in Chicago.

First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Cedar St., is presenting Bob and Bernice Scott in a series of classes that will discuss the challenges involved in blending step-families.

The series, “Second Chances – When Two Families Become One,” will meet on Thursdays starting next Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.

There will be an optional community meal at 6 p.m. for $5. The class is free.

Centennial celebration

Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., is celebrating 100 years of worship Sunday.

The worship service will be at 10:30 a.m. and will include former pastors of the church, as well as music from the church chancel and handbell choirs.

After the service there will be a catered lunch and 100 balloons will be released into the sky to conclude the celebration.

Miryam’s House, 1805 W. Ninth Ave., is celebrating 20 years of helping women who may be recovering from addiction, abuse or other life crises.

The celebration begins at 3 p.m. Friday with an open house. There will be a short presentation to remember significant events in the house. There also will be tours and refreshments.

New pastor

Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth Ave., is officially installing its new pastor, Floyd Schneider, during its 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.

“The Unity Church, 2900 S. Bernard St., is presenting “Sounds for the Soul Music Concert and Workshop” on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., that will include music from many different cultures, such as Native American, Hindi and Islamic traditions.

The concert will feature Mark Stanton Welch, a singer, songwriter and a song healer. Welch also will teach the workshop.

The cost is $20 for the workshop or $10 for students and seniors. The concert is $15 or $5 for students and seniors.

Movie premier

The Unity Center of North Spokane, 4123 E. Lincoln Road, is presenting a screening of the movie, “The Consciousness of the Christ: Reclaiming Jesus for a New Humanity” on Friday at 7 p.m.

New church location

Christ the King Anglican Church is moving to share its location with Lincoln Heights Congregational Church, 3527 E. 29th Ave.

Christ the King services will be at 9 a.m., and Lincoln Heights will hold its service at 11 a.m. starting Sunday.
