Thursday’s results
Padres 4, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Mike Cameron’s bases-loaded single broke open a scoreless game in the seventh inning and sent San Diego to a victory that knocked the Reds further back in the playoff chase. The Padres secured their wild-card lead and headed for Los Angeles and a four-game showdown with the West leaders. It’s the last time that the division’s top two teams are scheduled to play this season. Since they moved within a percentage point of first place in the Central on Aug. 24, the Reds have lost 13 of 18. Cincinnati stands fifth in the wild-card race, trailing the Padres by 4 1/2 with 16 games left.
Cubs 6, Dodgers 5: At Chicago, Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer off reliever Brett Tomko in the seventh inning and the Cubs rallied for a victory that reduced Los Angeles’ lead in the West to one-half game.
Giants 5, Rockies 0: At San Francisco, Matt Cain allowed two hits in eight superb innings to win his fourth straight start, and the Giants gained ground in the West race with a victory over Colorado. Omar Vizquel scored the game’s first run in the sixth inning on Moises Alou’s double-play grounder, and the Giants added four more in the seventh.
Braves 4, Phillies 1: At Atlanta, Chuck James pitched seven shutout innings, Andruw Jones hit his 34th home run, and the Braves beat Philadelphia to drop the Phillies into a second-place tie for the wild card.
