Cougars cage Grizzlies in soccer

Kim Bonnes and Elysse Van Leer each scored their first goals of the season as the Washington State women’s soccer team edged visiting Montana 2-1 in a non-conference match Friday at Pullman.

The Cougars (4-2-1) jumped out to an early lead in the second minute.

Van Leer headed the ball in off an Anna Miller corner kick and sent it into the far corner of the net for the first goal of her Cougars career.

After the Grizzlies (3-4-0) tied the match at the 38-minute mark, WSU pulled ahead as Bonnes scored the game-winning goal from 18 yards out.

The Cougars wrap up their non-conference home schedule when they host Idaho on Sunday at noon.

•After 85 scoreless minutes, Nicole Garbin scored the lone goal of the game and visiting Oregon (3-3-0) edged Gonzaga 1-0 in a non-conference match.

Garbin scored after breaking loose just inside the midfield and went 1-on-1 with Bulldogs (3-3-1) goalkeeper Jessie Thalman, who saved seven shots in the match.

Gonzaga looks to break its three-game losing streak when they host Utah Valley State Sunday at Martin Field at 1 p.m.

•Janessa Currier and Meagan Holmes each scored in the second half as USC topped Eastern Washington 2-0 in a non-conference matchup in Los Angeles.

Holmes added the insurance goal for the Trojans (5-1-1) when she headed in a corner kick from Jocelyn Hein.

Eagles (1-5-1) goalkeeper Tiera Como made 11 saves in the game. USC outshot Eastern Washington 24-1.

•Lindsay Hood scored twice and Ashley Imes added one goal and two assists as CC Spokane crushed Yakima Valley (1-2-1, 1-2-1) 5-0 in NWAACC action at Yakima, Wash.

Katlyn Laughlin tallied a goal and an assists for the Sasquatch (3-2-0, 3-1-0). Amy Danielson recorded the shutout.

•Utah Valley State (3-3-1) had a goal in each half and defeated Idaho 2-0 in non-conference play in Moscow.

The Vandals (0-8-0) were the aggressor, holding a 17-14 shot advantage, but suffered their seventh shutout loss of the season.

Volleyball

Idaho ended a season-long losing streak and program-worst 10-match skid with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Washington State (12-2) in non-conference action at Moscow, Idaho.

It also ended the Cougars’ nine-match win streak in the home opener for Idaho (1-9).

Kelly Rosin led the Cougars with 15 kills while Brittany Johnson added 11 kills.

Kelly Hyder had 12 digs and Tara West had all five Cougars blocks.

•Konae Purcell had 24 kills total and Meredith Dolny registered 16 digs on the day as North Idaho won all three of its matches at the North Idaho tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

The Cardinals (20-3) swept Chemeketa (5-9), Salt Lake CC and an All-Star team all in two games.

In the same tournament, Community Colleges of Spokane (5-6) lost all three of its matches for the day. The Sasquatch were swept by Salt Lake CC (15-8), Whatcom (10-6) and Southern Idaho (6-9).

•Oregon knocked off Gonzaga (4-8) in three games to earn its ninth straight victory at the Boise State tournament.

The Ducks (9-0) held the Bulldogs’ top hitter, Becky Jones, to nine kills. Gonzaga was held to 32 kills as a team.

•Angie Florence led all players with 12 kills while Nikki Bardwell and Holly Tomlin combined for 20 kills, but Whitworth (1-10, 0-1) fell in three games in its Northwest Conference opener against 10th-ranked Linfield (8-0, 1-0) in McMinnville, Ore.

Men’s soccer

Chris Zalud made his first goal of the season and Hawk Mummey picked up his third shutout as CC Spokane (5-2-0, 3-1-0) beat Peninsula 4-0 in NWAACC action at Port Angeles, Wash.

The Sasquatch outshot Peninsula (3-2-1, 1-2-1) 17-8.
