Time to throw the book at Mel?

A suburban Chicago library will consider whether to take down a poster of Mel Gibson in light of his recent anti-Semitic tirade.

The Schaumburg Township Library Board on Tuesday will discuss a request to remove a poster of Gibson in his film “Braveheart,” about the Scottish warrior William Wallace.

It’s not clear whether the request came from the staff or from the public suggestion box, library President Anita Forte-Scott said.

“The request will be given some serious discussion and thought, but I don’t think it’s a real heated issue,” she added.

During a drunk driving arrest in July, the “Passion of the Christ” director said that Jews were responsible for all the wars in the world. He later apologized.

Says Bob Doyle, executive director of the Illinois Library Association: “Libraries represent all types of thought, so if someone goes into a library and doesn’t find something that is offensive to them, the library might not be doing a very good job.”

Some Fonda advice

Jane Fonda is praising a studio exec’s scolding of Lindsay Lohan for absences during the filming of their upcoming “Georgia Rule.”

James G. Robinson, CEO of Morgan Creek Productions, took the 20-year-old Lohan to task for her complaints of heat exhaustion, saying: “We are well aware that your ongoing all-night, heavy partying is the real reason for your so-called ‘exhaustion.’ “

Says Fonda: “(S)he’s young, and she can get away with it. But, you know, it’s hard after a while to party very hard and work very hard. She learned that, I hope.”

They’re OK, by George!

Elton John appears to have ended his public feud with George Michael.

Two years ago, John said Michael seemed miserable and needed to get out more. Michael responded with a furious open letter saying John was no friend of his.

“George and I are fine,” John says. “He came and stayed down (at) my house last year. It’s up to him what he does with his life, and I don’t really want to get into that anymore.”

A little Love lost

A judge has dismissed part of a $2 million lawsuit by Beach Boy Mike Love against former bandmate Al Jardine.

Love says he’s the only person legally allowed use the Beach Boys name, but Jardine has toured with “knockoff bands” under such names as Beach Boys Family & Friends.

The judge threw out breach of contract and other claims, but gave Love’s lawyer a chance to amend the case before it goes to trial Nov. 6.

Keep the faith

Marianne Faithfull, Mick Jagger‘s singer girlfriend in the 1960s, has postponed a world tour after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever,” she says.
