Jon Grant passed for 324 yards and five touchdowns Saturday, and UC Davis shut out Montana State 45-0 in Bozeman.
Tony Kays caught 10 passes for 143 yards and the first three TDs for the Aggies (2-1), ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division I-AA.
No. 20 Montana State (1-2) managed just eight first downs – one in the first half – and Cory Carpenter was intercepted twice. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 119 yards. It was the first time MSU has been shut out since its 44-0 loss at Portland State in 1997.
Northern Arizona 66, Dixie State 14: At Flagstaff, Ariz., Jeff Wheeler returned two interceptions for touchdowns, Alex Watson caught three scoring passes and the Lumberjacks routed the Rebels for their first victory of the year.
The Lumberjacks amassed 430 yards after accumulating 519 yards combined in its first two games against NCAA Division I-A teams Arizona State and Utah.
Northern Colorado 14, Texas State 13: At San Marcos, Texas, Matt West’s 5-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown helped the Bears end a week of punter-related turmoil with a win.
The Bears were playing for the first time since backup punter Mitch Cozad was accused of stabbing starter Rafael Mendoza in his kicking leg. Mendoza, who was treated and released from a hospital after the Monday incident, missed the game.
Weber State 24, Southern Utah 13: At Ogden, Utah, the Wildcats broke out of their scoring funk with a victory over the in-state rival Thunderbirds, after two weeks of futility.
The Wildcats (1-2), who had failed to score a touchdown in their first two games, played catchup against the Thunderbirds (2-1), whose defense surrendered a touchdown for the first time this season.
Trevyn Smith put the game out of reach with a 37-yard touchdown run on the Wildcats’ first possession of the second half, to make it 17-7.
Cal Poly 17, Sacramento State 10: At Sacramento, Matt Brennan threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns as the third-ranked Mustangs barely defeated the Hornets.
Ramses Barden caught nine passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs (3-0), who have won seven straight regular-season games dating back to last season.
Kris Daniels carried 20 times for 54 yards and one touchdown for the Hornets (0-2), who have lost four consecutive games to the Mustangs.
Without throwing a pass, Sacramento State controlled the ball on offense for nearly 18 minutes in the first half to stay close, but Brennan connected with Barden for a 17-yard TD early in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
