OUTPEDAL

Season waning on Hiawatha Trail

Depending on the weather, fall is perhaps the most scenic month to ride the tunnels and trestles of the Route of the Hiawatha rail trail near Lookout Pass.

But the window of opportunity is closing. The 15-mile route through the Bitterroots is scheduled to close for the season on Oct. 1. Do-it-yourselfers can go any day this week, but the shuttle service is on its fall schedule of Friday, Saturday and Sunday only.

OUTFIELD

Escalante turns 10

Ten years ago this week, outgoing President Clinton used his powers under the Antiquities Act to designate 1.9 million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, the first flagship monument entrusted to the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management.

This web of Utah canyonlands is considered a prize for everything from tourism to scientific research.
