Meyer takes shot at pitching

Erik Meyer, who set almost every passing record at Eastern Washington University, is throwing professionally again.

Meyer, cut by the Cincinnati Bengals during training camp, left Tuesday for Phoenix to play for the San Francisco Giants in baseball’s Arizona Fall Instructional League, according to his mother.

The right-handed pitcher was drafted three times in baseball, most recently by the Giants in June 2005. He was a standout pitcher at LaMirada, Calif., High School.

Nancy Meyer said her son had been offered a two-year contract if he shows up at spring training but he is still hoping to catch on with a pro football team and play in NFL Europe next spring.

NFL recognizes Pullman coach

Pullman High football coach Bill Peterson was selected as the NFL High School Coach of the Week, a selection made by the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

Peterson, a first-year head coach, has led the Greyhounds to four straight wins. They have outscored opponents 144-38. Eisenhower’s Dan Eyman was also selected.

The weekly award winners receive a $500 donation for their football program from the Seattle Seahawks and a $100 savings bond from Sterling Savings Bank.

Hirst walking on egg shells

Offensive tackle Joe Hirst, a former East Valley standout, is the only player pictured on the front of the Montana State football media guide not to be injured this season.

“A bad story just continues to get worse,” coach Mike Kramer said.

In last week’s game against Eastern, the Bobcats lost two defensive ends – Aaron Papich and Paul Bartsch.

Hirst, tailback Evin Groves, safety Ryan Force and Grant Elliott are on the cover of the media guide. Groves is out with a knee injury, Force with a shoulder injury and Elliott decided not to play because of back problems.
