Baseball

Mead scored five runs in the first inning and cruised past visiting Ferris (6-5) 8-4 Friday afternoon in the Greater Spokane League.

Sean McNaughten went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs and Tyler Thoreson added three hits and two runs for the Panthers.

Chris Allen picked up the win for Mead (8-3) after allowing three runs through five innings.

With the win, the Panthers move within 2 1/2 games of idle Mt. Spokane in the league standings.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Brandon Hughes went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs as Shadle Park topped host Lewis and Clark (2-11) 10-2 at Hart Field. Eric Hendricks added two hits and three runs for the Highlanders, who scored five runs in the sixth to go ahead 10-1. Ryan Shontell picked up the win for Shadle (5-6), allowing five hits in the complete game. … Rogers scored two runs in the top of the eighth and beat host Gonzaga Prep (4-9) 4-2 in eight innings. Scotty Livengood’s squeeze bunt in the eighth brought home Andrew Durant and put the Pirates (5-6) on top 3-2. Jacob Campbell then hit a single to score Jacob Partridge to cap the scoring. Livengood earned the win for Rogers after scattering five hits in the complete game. … Tanner Hamilton hit a three-run homer in the sixth as East Valley beat visiting Central Valley (6-7) 8-4. Zach Kurtz also homered for the Knights, a two-run blast in the second. Jesse Adams (1-0) earned the win for East Valley (4-7) after allowing four hits in 5 2/3 innings. … Danny Jordan hit a two-run double in the eighth and Jacob Schnibbe added a two-RBI single as University defeated host North Central 9-5 in eight innings. Evan Witt was 3 for 4 with two runs to lead the Indians (6-7), who scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Billy Moon picked up the win in relief for the Titans (8-3).

Andy Seaman went 2 for 5 and drove in two runs as Coeur d’Alene won 11-7 at Post Falls in the Inland Empire League. J.J. Turbin finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Vikings, who took advantage of two Trojans errors and scored six unearned runs in the second inning. Post Falls responded by scoring five runs on seven straight hits in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Haas went 3 for 4 and knocked in two runs to lead the Trojans (6-8, 3-5). Steve Welton earned the win for CdA (12-2, 6-2).

Boys soccer

Cole Abramson and Jeremy Jacobs each had a goal as East Valley blanked Ferris 2-0 in Greater Spokane League play at Joe Albi Stadium. The Knights’ aggressive defense limited the Saxons’ scoring opportunities. Josh Peck made four saves for EV (6-3, 5-1), which outshot Ferris (6-5, 3-3) 18-14. … Elsewhere in the GSL, senior Mike Shriver’s goal in the 26th minute was all Mead needed as the Panthers beat visiting Lewis and Clark 1-0. Mead goalkeeper Zach Knechtges made an impressive save on Matt Hurst’s shot in the 37th minute. Knechtges finished with six saves for the Panthers (8-1, 5-1), who outshot the Tigers (7-3, 5-2) 12-9. … Bill McElroy scored both of University’s goals as the Titans edged host Gonzaga Prep 2-1. McElroy’s goal in the 59th minute turned out to be the game-winner. Ryan Dixon made six saves for University (7-3, 6-1), which outshot the Bullpups (3-5, 2-3) 9-6. The Titans remain a half game ahead of Mead in the league standings … Chris Rothrock scored two second-half goals, leading Shadle Park to a 3-0 win over host North Central. The Indians’ Jake Krueger scored the first goal of the game in the 63rd minute. The Highlanders (4-6, 3-4) dominated the action, outshooting the Indians (2-8, 0-6) 17-8. … Brett Megaard scored two goals as Mt. Spokane routed host Rogers (2-6, 1-5) 7-2. Nick Reilly, Renton Day and Andrew Jones all added goals for the Wildcats (1-9, 1-5). The Pirates had two own goals.

Softball

Amber Coburn (6-0) allowed three hits and no runs while striking out 10 as Coeur d’Alene routed host Sandpoint (0-8, 0-6) 15-0 in six innings in the Inland Empire League. Monica Conroy finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs for the Vikings (14-1, 8-1), who built an 8-0 lead after four innings. Coeur d’Alene scored seven runs in the sixth to put the game away. Jenna DeLong added two triples, two runs and two RBIs for the Vikings.
