Celtic spirituality

J. Philip Newell is the keynote speaker for the Weekend on Celtic Spirituality that begins Friday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Newell is writer-theologian for the Scottish Cathedral of the Isles and companion theologian for the America Spirituality Center of Casa del Sol in New Mexico.

He will speak Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on “Listening for the Heartbeat of God: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality.” The topic next Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be “Christ and Creation: The Twin-Loves of Celtic Christianity.”

The cost is $15 for Friday and $25 for Saturday, which does not include lunch.

Newell also will speak on “Sounds of the Eternal” during the adult education time at 10 a.m. April 29. For more information, call Karen Robbins at (509) 455-6795. The cathedral is at 127 E. 12th Ave.

Crop Walk

The 29th annual Crop Walk against hunger will be April 29 at the Martin Centre on the Gonzaga University campus. Walkers sign up sponsors and may follow a 10-kilometer or two-mile route on the Centennial Trail.

The opening ceremony at noon will include a performance by the Voiceless, a choir whose members are homeless or formerly homeless. The featured speaker is Lynn Magnuson, regional director of Church World Service.

Those attending are asked to bring canned food for Second Harvest Food Bank.

The walk begins at 1:30 p.m. Local organizations such as Second Harvest, Interfaith Hospitality, Mid-City Concerns and Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels will receive 25 percent of the money raised. Auction 2007

Central United Methodist Church and Shalom Ministries are hosting their Auction 2007 fundraiser today at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

The evening begins with dinner, dancing and a silent auction at 6 p.m.

A live auction will begin at 8. Items up for bid include tickets to plays and opera productions, an overnight stay at the Davenport Hotel, art, kayaking lessons and a basketball signed by Adam Morrison and other Gonzaga University players.

Organ concerts

“Knox Presbyterian Church will host an organ and hand bell concert today at 7 p.m.. The performance will feature Phyllis Tincher, director of two hand bell choirs at First Presbyterian Church in Boise, and Sean Rogers, formerly the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Boise.

The church is at 806 W. Knox Ave.

“Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene will host organist Linda Harms in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday. She will play a renovated tubular pneumatic pipe organ originally installed in the Coeur d’Alene Methodist Church in 1908.

The music will include Bach, Manz and Mendelssohn. Admission is free. The church is at 1470 W. Hanley Ave.

Earth Day fair

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chewelah, Wash., will host Earth Day activities today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a free biscuits and gravy feed, raffles, kids’ activities, vendors and an auction.

Free seeds and trees will be given away. Master Gardeners from the Washington State University Extension Office will on hand to answer garden questions. The church is at 202 N. Second in Chewelah, north of Spokane on Highway 395.

Multifaith service

The Interfaith Council of Spokane and Bethany Presbyterian Church are sponsoring a special worship service that will combine elements of several different faith traditions at 10 a.m. Sunday at Bethany Presbyterian, 301 S. Freya St. A potluck lunch will follow.

Those attending are asked to bring a dish that is either dairy or vegetable-based. For more details, call (509) 534-0066.
