In brief: Four injured in collision

The Spokesman-Review

A driver who ran a stop sign caused a crash near U.S. Highway 95 and Lancaster Avenue on Wednesday that sent four people to the hospital, the Idaho State Police said.

Corrine Phillips, 17, of Post Falls, was westbound on Lancaster about 4:30 p.m. when she failed to stop, according to a press release from the ISP.

A 1987 Honda Prelude driven by Anthony Houston, 32, of Spirit Lake, was headed north on Highway 95 when it hit Phillips’ 1993 Pontiac Grand Am.

The two drivers were taken to Kootenai Medical Center, as were two passengers in Phillips’ car. All were treated and released.

Phillips was cited for failing to yield at a stop sign.

East Helena

Two arrested in theft of explosives

Two men were arrested Wednesday in connection with theft of 250-300 pounds of dynamite and detonation cord from a bunker near Victor, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Cheryl Liedle said.

Authorities stopped Cory Pritchard, 18, and Brett Pritchard, 19, early Wednesday as they traveled on U.S. 12 near East Helena.

Liedle said the men, both from Victor, were held for questioning and later arrested on federal charges of theft of explosive materials.

Liedle said the explosives and cord were stolen sometime last weekend from the registered bunker. Explosives were kept there for eventual quarry work, she said. There was no indication that explosives were transported to the Helena area, she said.

The Pritchards are scheduled to appear before a federal judge today in Missoula.

The ongoing investigation includes the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Wallace

Three arrested after traffic stop

Three Montana men were arrested Tuesday evening after Idaho State Police stopped the car they were riding in for speeding on Interstate 90.

An ISP corporal stopped the 1988 Oldsmobile near Wallace and saw a pistol inside the car as the driver stepped out, according to ISP reports.

Backseat passenger Keith C. Baylor got out of the vehicle and ran north on the freeway, ISP said.

The driver, 32-year-old Arnold J. Sherwood, was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun. Passenger Shawn C. Shourds, 28, was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant out of Washington.

Silver Valley authorities and ISP searched for six hours before finding Baylor near the Coeur d’Alene River. He was arrested on charges of obstructing and delaying an officer.
