Rathdrum Prairie News: Rathdrum Grange is a busy place

Mary Jane Honegger Correspondent

Ever wonder what goes on at the Rathdrum Grange?

Well, according to the guy in charge of the building, “A whole lot.”

Ken Hill says the Grange hall is the meeting place for several organizations and groups, and it also is rented for a lot of events such as anniversary and birthday parties and memorial services.

The Cowboy Church meets there every Sunday morning, and Presbyterians hold evening services there. On Monday and Wednesday evenings, driver’s education classes are taught there.

Grange members themselves meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

On the second Tuesday of the month, the Royal Neighbors, a group of local women, meets there.

The building also is host to gospel music on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The musical performances from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. are open to the public at no charge. Line dancing is held at the Grange on the first Saturday of each month, and several craft shows also are scheduled each year.

As with several other local buildings, the old Grange hall originally was a Farragut naval building, said to have been a hospital ward.

Today, 40 Grange members call it home, and the building, at state Highway 41 and Boekel Road, is a busy part of the community.

Parents say thanks

Lakeland Senior Class Parents, the group behind raising money to provide a drug- and alcohol-free party for Lakeland High School’s graduating seniors, thanks the community for its support this year.

Co-chairwomen Kristi Asburry and Corrinne Van Zandt express their gratitude to the community for supporting the group’s fundraising and to the parents of seniors who worked hard behind the scenes.

“Our community is wonderful – they really support us each year,” said Van Zandt.

Proceeds from the group’s largest and final fundraiser, the March 24 dinner and auction, nearly doubled the amount raised last year.

“An outstanding group of people donated items for the auction, and those in charge of finding donations really outdid themselves,” Van Zandt said.

Donations from Western States, Les Schwab, Twin Lakes Golf Course and the Coeur d’Alene Casino interested many bidders, as did the offer of 10 front-row seats for Lakeland’s graduation ceremony this year.

Asburry and Van Zandt also thanked Lakeland Principal Conrad Underdahl, auctioneer Clint Cord, Teck Storrs, Eda Darwood, Tracy Moody, Mike and Cindy Clawson, Stein’s IGA (especially Jim Stein) and the parents of seniors for all their help.

The party for seniors will be held at Triple Play on graduation night, June 9.

Thunder Thursday

Warm weather brings out the motorcycles. Hundreds of bikers will be a familiar sight again on Rathdrum Prairie next Thursday when the Hot Rod Cafe in Post Falls holds a Thunder Thursday Bike Night Kick-Off Party from 6 to 9 p.m.

Cruisers, at Stateline, also offers a similar event year-round. The two venues give bikers the chance to enjoy a midweek ride, great food and live music and the opportunity to meet new and old friends.

For more information, call the Hot Rod Cafe at 777-1712 or Cruisers at 773-4706.
