Wildfire torch Angels

Michelle Wells doubled and homered and drove in three runs to lead the Northwest Wildfire of Hayden to a 12-4 six-inning victory over the San Francisco Angels in the championship game of the ASA Girls 18U Fast Pitch Western National at Franklin Park.

Casey Olson didn’t allow a hit after giving up four runs on four hits in the first inning when San Francisco jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Swimming

Jeff Erwin of Boise won the USMS Open Water National Championship Saturday at the Long Bridge in Sandpoint.

The 43-year-old covered the course in 34 minutes, 42 seconds, beating Jim Dugan of Bozeman, Mont., by 16 seconds.

Susanne Simpson, 47 of Spokane, was the top female finisher in 40:26.

Golf

Four more golfers earned spots in the season-ending Sterling Savings Bank Shootout by winning their classification at this weekend’s Wandermere Amateur.

Sean Clements was the winner of the championship flight with a score of 201 gross. Also qualifying were Jeff McBroom (192 net), Brent Steinhart (195 net) and Larry Strobel (198 net).

The Sterling Savings Bank Shootout will be held Sept. 24 at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.

Baseball

The Spokane RiverHawks completed their West Coast Collegiate Baseball League season with an 8-1 victory over the Kitsap BlueJackets at Bremerton.

Just Wack It was the open division champions at the Spike and Dig tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.
