Baynes’ Aussies lose

Washington State University’s Aron Baynes totaled 14 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots Friday, but his native Australia lost to Israel 74-62 in basketball at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

Israel stormed to a 14-2 lead and used a 10-4 third-quarter spurt to hold off an Australian rally.

Baynes is averaging 16 points and nine rebounds at the tournament.

Australia (0-2) will play Angola today in a second-phase game.

New Zealand (1-1), with WSU guard Thomas Abercrombie, will play Sunday.

Boxing

Favio Medina of Sandpoint scored a unanimous decision over Billy Gates Thursday night in the 148-pound, 10-round co-main event at Coeur d’Alene’s House of Fury at Worley, Idaho.

Shaun George was the victor at 187 pounds when Matthew Charleston retired after the fourth round of the other co-main event.

In a heavyweight bout, Eric Boose won by TKO in the fourth round over Marcellus Brown.

At 168 pounds, Sam Haynes scored a fourth-round TKO over Adrian Herman. At 154 pounds, Abel Perry won with a second-round TKO over Jessie Salway.

Angie Dauenhaur and Janna Simms fought to a draw at 154 pounds.
