Voters decide issues in nearby counties
Voters in outlying counties will decide some tax measures and narrow a number of school board and fire commission races in Tuesday’s primary election, but there are relatively few contested municipal races.
“In Whitman County, Colfax residents must eliminate one of three mayoral candidates, who include Earl Leland, David Szambelan and incumbent Norma Becker.
“Endicott Park and Recreation District patrons are asked to approve a one-year, $35,000 special levy for the district’s swimming pool and to support its operating, capital and reserve funds. The levy would cost an estimated 54 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.
“Malden residents face two money measures.
One is a special levy that would collect $15,000 next year to support police and fire protection and general government costs, at an estimated rate of $4.77 per $1,000 of assessed value. The other is a one-year, $10,000 levy for the “street and town maintenance” fund, which would cost an estimated $3.18 per thousand.
“In Lincoln County, the towns of Odessa and Almira both have contested mayoral races.
Five people want to replace Odessa Mayor Sam Braun, who is stepping down. They are Samual Todd, Raymond Bacon, Ron Costlow, Doug Plinski and Jan Noble.
Almira Mayor Einar Larson faces two challengers: Darrell Francis and Joyce Mings.
“In Pend Oreille County, Newport-area residents are asked to provide a one-year, $110,000 levy for their cemetery district. The measure would cost an estimated 15 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
