Bernard leads Beavs to win
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Yvenson Bernard ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns and Oregon State opened the season with a 24-7 victory over Utah on Thursday night.
Sophomore Sean Canfield completed eight of 19 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown for the Beavers (1-0). Canfield is in competition with Lyle Moevao to become Oregon State’s starter.
Utah quarterback Brian Johnson completed 8 of 13 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown, but left at the half with an apparent separated shoulder.
Canfield started the game but Moevao came in to start the second quarter and his first pass was intercepted.
Utah (0-1) scored on the ensuing drive when Johnson hit Brent Casteel with a 36-yard pass to make it 7-0.
Canfield came back in for the Beavers in the second half, finding Catchings with a 6-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to put the Beavers ahead 14-7. Alexis Serna added a 37-yard field goal before the quarter’s end.
Bernard, who rushed for 1,307 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
