Area roundup: Whitworth takes title

Ryan Symes scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to guide the Whitworth men’s basketball team to a 93-58 win over Redlands in the championship game of the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament on Saturday in Redlands, Calif.

Nate Montgomery tossed in 16 points and Colin Willemsen added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates.

The Pirates improved to 4-1 on the season while Redlands dropped to 3-3.

“Miilah Kombat led five players in double figures with 14 points as North Idaho defeated Grant Macewan in the championship game of the SWAC Challenge in Coeur d’Alene.

Melvin Jones had 13 points, David Johnson tossed in 12 and Steve Wesley and Lateef Williams added 11 apiece for the Cardinals (7-0).

Women’s basketball

Texas Tech got off to a fast start and cruised to an 89-45 non-conference victory over Washington State at Friel Court in Pullman.

Stanecia Graham led four Raiders in double figures with 19 points. Erin Myrick had 15 points and Maria Moore and Ashlee Roberson each added 10 for Texas Tech.

Katie Appleton scored 13 points and Jasmine Williams added 10 to lead the Cougars.

WSU fell to 2-5 on the season while the Raiders improved to 9-0.

“Idaho remained winless after falling 70-58 to North Dakota State in a non-conference game in Moscow, Idaho.

Brenda Slyt scored 18 points and Annika Walseth added 15 to lead the Bisons (2-4).

Sophomore Katie Madison had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Vandals (0-7).

“Ashlee Michelson had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead CC of Spokane (3-4) to a 81-71 win over Lane at the Everett Classic at Everett Community College.

The Sasquatch will play Everett today for the championship.
