The Greater Spokane League wrestling season got off to a wild start Wednesday night when a flagrant foul cost Ferris a chance to upset visiting University.
The Titans prevailed 38-36 when Ryan Tibbett (112 pounds) was handed a three-point misconduct foul. The teams otherwise split the 14 matches.
U-Hi’s Danny Jordan (171 pounds) pinned Andre Rivera in 8 seconds, catching him in a cradle. Rivera had defeated Jordan twice before.
In a match of district veterans, Ryan Zumwalt of the Titans topped Josh Rettinghouse 5-1 at 140.
The Saxons won the final two matches by pins, with Coby Walsh at 145 and Max Coulson at 150.
In other openers, Tyler Simmet’s 8-4 win at 135 over Kyle Courtney in the final match of the night sealed Central Valley’s 36-27 win over visiting Mead. The Bears picked up big wins at 112, with freshman Jarod Maynes defeating Sam Edminster 7-2, and at 285, with Colby Davis pinning Cody Foote. The Bears won the league title last season while Mead was fourth place. … Teddy Fernau (189) pinned Bo Schuetzle during the first round of the final match to preserve Mt. Spokane’s 40-31 win over Shadle Park at Mt. Spokane. The Wildcats led by three points entering the final match. Mt. Spokane’s Ryan Phillipy added a key pin at 152. … Vang Lor (119), Aaron Brown (130), Nathon Harkness (135) and Henry Tacner (171) registered pins to help Rogers to a 39-33 win at North Central. Scott Simchuk (140), Jeremy Voelker (215) and Steven Taylor (285) had pins for the Indians. … Shane Lee (119) overcame an 11-3 deficit to pin Jeff Norisada as host East Valley defeated Lewis and Clark 64-9. The Knights placed second in the league last season. EV’s Dillon Pattison (112) earned his first varsity win. At 275, LC’s Andre Taylor topped Alaric Park 3-0. … League play continues tonight with CV at EV; U-Hi at Mead; Ferris at Rogers; Gonzaga Prep at Mt. Spokane; and Shadle at LC.
“Jack Dunbar (189), trailing 2-0 after the first round, pinned Jordan McGeal with 6 seconds left in the second round to help Medical Lake defeat visiting Pullman 43-30 in a Great Northern League opener. ML freshman Tim Haynes, wrestling up a weight at 160, secured a 12-3 major decision over Travis Kiethley.
Gymnastics
Courtney Sexton won the uneven bars (7.05) and finished second in the all-around (31.7) to lead Central Valley to the team title during a four-way Greater Spokane League opener at Lewis and Clark. Loreah Winlow of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) won the all-around at 32.15, capturing the balance beam (8.4), floor exercise (8.65) and vault (8.4). For CV, Emma Vidmar was third in the all-around and Brittney Szoke was fourth. Kirstie Dominguez of the host Tigers placed fifth in the all-around.
Girls basketball
Shaniqua Nilles scored 22 points to guide West Valley (3-0) to a 55-47 non-league win over host Lakeland at Rathdrum. The Eagles never trailed in the second half. Ali Whitted had eight rebounds for the Hawks (0-5) … Chelsea Brisbois finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kettle Falls (3-0) to a 60-53 win over Selkirk (0-3). KF shot 8 of 12 from the line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Rangers. Selkirk’s Heather Pope had 16 points and nine rebounds.
Boys basketball
Shelby Hite and Kolton McInelly hit two 3-pointers apiece in the third quarter to help Kettle Falls (2-1) to a 61-49 non-league win over visiting Selkirk. Cody McBride had six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who built a 20-point lead in the third quarter. Desmond Anderson scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Rangers (1-2).
Junior hockey
The Castlegar Rebels (18-12-1) scored two second-period goals and defeated the Spokane Braves 4-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Castlegar, British Columbia. Andrew Christ, in his first game back from Junior A, scored for the Braves (13-15-3).
