Free throws were the difference in Lake City’s 76-53 victory over host Lakeland (1-2, 0-1) in an Inland Empire League opener Thursday night in Rathdrum. The Timberwolves (2-1, 1-0) were great at the line, hitting 26 of 31 free-throw attempts. LC took a seven-point lead in the first quarter and gradually extended the lead after each quarter. Senior Nick Fromm scored 15 points for the Timberwolves, with Ben Carroll adding 12 and Wes Beuson 11. Lakeland got 14 points from Joel Underdahl and 10 from Dylan Cloyd.

“In non-league play, center Brendan Greene scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had five blocks to help lead the host Medical Lake Cardinals (2-0) to a 55-40 victory over the Northport Mustangs (1-2). David Ramacus added eight assists to his 11 points while Gardner Torrence had five steals to go along with his nine points for the Cardinals. Tucker Guglielmino scored 16 points for the Mustangs. … Tekoa-Oakesdale was a 76-33 victor at home over Potlatch. Kelly Cook scored 22 points, 14 in the first quarter when the Nighthawks (3-1) took off to a 22-8 lead. He also had six assists and five steals, as Potlatch turned the ball over 29 times. Josiah Tampien added 21 points and four steals for T-O. Casey Cook added 11 points. … Drew Wilkinson scored 23 points, Mike Martin 19 and Thomas McMahon scored 10 and added 10 rebounds as Clark Fork defeated the Sandpoint JV. … Ryan Young scored 13 points to lead Lewiston to a 63-57 victory over Pullman, which got 15 from AJ Sandford and 14 from AJ Therien.

Girls basketball

In the Inland Empire League, Kama Griffitts scored 23 points and added five assists in Coeur d’Alene’s 76-22 victory over the visiting Moscow Bears (0-7, 0-3). The Vikings (5-0, 2-0) also got 15 points from Sadie Simon.

“In non-league play, the Medical Lake Cardinals rolled to a 69-19 victory over visiting Northport. Four Cardinals scored in double figures: Chelsea Hardenbrook (16), Marissa Propeck (13), Gabrielle Daily (12) and Kaitlin McNeill (10). Medical Lake (2-0) made 35 steals while Daily collected 17 rebounds. The Mustangs (0-3) were led by Shyanne Wilson, who scored 10 points, including 6 of 6 from the line. … Leading by a point at halftime, Tekoa-Oakesdale suffered through a 6-minute scoring drought in a two-point third quarter and fell to Potlatch 52-42. Shelby Puckett led the Nighthawks (3-1) with 19 points. Ondrea Palmer scored 17 for Potlatch. … Wallace held 6-foot-1 post Cassie Thompson to four points in the first half, but the Timberlake freshman finished with 23 as the Tigers (5-3) pulled away from the host Miners (0-7) to win 47-26. Kacie Winstrom added 11 points for Timberlake. … … Clark Fork came up with a 12-point edge in the fourth quarter and rallied to defeat visiting Bonners Ferry 48-44. The Wampus Cats (2-0) were led by Shaina Gustafson with 11 points and 10 from Megan Hess. Mandy Martin added 10 rebounds.

GSL gymnastics

Kali Young of Shadle Park took first in the all-around with 34.7 points while Mead emerged as the team champion in a four-way Greater Spokane League meet that also included Mt. Spokane and host Ferris.

Young also was first on the uneven bars (8.1) and floor exercise (9.15) and second to Meghan Ballon (9.5) of Mt. Spokane on the balance beam. Taylor Gray, third in the all-around, was first in the vault at 8.6 with Young second.

At North Central, the host Indians got a 1-2 finish from Katie and Heidi Sweatt in the all-around and NC defeated University.
