David Johnson scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the North Idaho Cardinals to an 88-72 men’s basketball victory over the Treasure Valley Chukars at the Salt Lake Community College Tournament at Salt Lake City.
Humberto Perez chipped in 13 points, Melvin Jones 12 and Steve Wesley 11 for NIC (9-0).
Kyle Hart scored a game-high 20 points to lead TVCC (1-2).
Women’s basketball
Liz Horiatis had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Whitworth to an 83-82 win over Northwest at the Nick-N-Willy’s Winter Classic in Tacoma.
Alida Bower made two free throws with 4 seconds left to seal the deal for the Pirates.
Courtney Gaddis had 16 points and six rebounds and Natalie Orrell added 12 points and six boards for Whitworth (3-2).
Brittany Bowsher had a game-high 33 points to lead the Eagles, who fell to 1-5 on the season.
•Jessica Thompson led four players in double figures with 21 points and Boise State cruised to an 88-66 non-conference win over Washington at the Taco Bell Arena in Boise.
Tasha Harris contributed 15 points and six assists, Brittany Moore chipped in 14 points and Jackie Lee added 12 for the Broncos (5-3), who took control in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 50-35.
Three players reached double figures for Washington (4-6), led by Michelle Augustavo’s 14 points. Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark) had 13 and Emily Florence added 10.
Hockey
Shane Horlacher, Bret Kellogg and Conner Olstad all scored goals as the Spokane Braves (14-14-3) defeated the Kimberley Dynamiters (12-14-4) 3-2 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Kimberley.
Wrestling
North Idaho won the final two matches and edged Northwest College 21-18 in Coeur d’Alene.
At 197 pounds, NIC’s Brett Fredericksen pinned Nathan Barzee in 2 minutes, 22 seconds. In the next match, the Cardinals’ Tim Ofield (285) pinned Brian Cates in 2:15 to give North Idaho the victory.
