The Slice
If the Sterling Savings Last Chance Bowl was an actual football game, picking the teams would have posed a problem this year.
As you might recall, when The Slice first proposed this Spokane bowl game back in 2000 the idea was to match two winless Division 1-A squads. The whole thing would be a salute to enduring hope and the primacy of academics — not to mention a memorable, butt-numbing outing for the whole family.
But in 2007, every major college team won at least one game.
So the invitation committee would have faced choosing from five schools that all went 1-11: Duke, Minnesota, Southern Methodist, Florida International and local favorite Idaho.
Admittedly, that wouldn’t be nearly as intriguing as a battle of two 0-12 teams.
Maybe next year.
