3A District I

Darbie Shelden scored 13 points, including 11 in the second half, and Mallory Lehman added 12 as St. Maries used great second-half free-throw shooting to beat Timberlake 41-36 Friday in a 3A District I tournament opener at North Idaho College.

The Lumberjacks (6-15) were 14 of 21 from the free-throw line in the second half and outscored the Tigers 26-20.

Lorna Grant and Holli Edelblute tallied 12 points apiece for Timberlake (4-17), which is finished for the season.

St. Maries advances to play top-seeded Bonners Ferry at 7:30 p.m. today at North Idaho College.

Great Northern League

Missy Carey’s basket with 8 seconds left gave West Valley (8-8, 6-4) a come-from-behind 55-53 win over host Cheney (9-7, 5-5). Carey and Melissa Maura finished with 14 points each for the Eagles, who outscored the Blackhawks 36-19 in the second half to erase a 15-point halftime deficit. Kyle Miller led all scorers with 17 points for Cheney. … Misty Atkinson scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Kellie McCann-Smith added 28 points and 10 boards as Clarkston (12-4, 9-1) topped visiting Medical Lake (6-10, 3-7) 78-59. Richelle Daily tallied a team-high 18 points for the Cardinals, who trailed by 12 at halftime. … Shea Spicer scored 16 points and Chelsi Marshall added nine as Riverside (7-8, 4-6) edged host Colville (1-14, 0-9) 38-35. Emily Pond led the Indians with 14 points. … Kirsi Voshell scored a game-high 17 points and Jessica Thomas added 14 points, nine rebounds and eight steals as Pullman (15-0, 9-0) routed short-handed Deer Park (4-12, 3-7) 69-33 in Deer Park. Dominique Swenson tallied a team-high 12 points for the Stags, who were without three starters.

Northeast A League

Megan McIntyre scored 18 points and Jennesa Miller added 17 as Freeman (15-4, 7-2) whipped host Newport (7-12, 2-7) 58-19. Kelsey Raines tossed in nine points for the Scotties, who outscored the Grizzlies 33-10 in the first half. Alicia Smith tallied a team-high nine points for Newport. … Aleesha Denney and Kia Gibson scored 17 points apiece as Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) topped host Kettle Falls 64-42. The Eagles (13-7, 6-4) outscored the Bulldogs 22-10 in the third quarter and led 49-25 entering the fourth quarter. Jessica Coots scored 10 points for KF.
