Hingis downs Ivanovic, wins Pacific Open

Martina Hingis won her record fifth Pan Pacific Open title Sunday in Tokyo, beating 19-year-old Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2.

Hingis, who lost to Elena Dementieva in the final last year, relied on solid groundstrokes to beat the fifth-seeded Serb in just over an hour.

Hingis, who won in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002, broke a tie with Lindsay Davenport for the most titles in the event.

•Marcos Baghdatis won his second career title by beating defending champion Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 at the Zagreb Open in Zagreb, Croatia.

The second-seeded Cypriot saved four break points in the opening set – one with an ace and two others with service winners. Baghdatis saved another five break points in the final set, including one in the opening game.

•Top-seed James Blake led third-seed Xavier Malisse 7-5, 3-3 when rain forced officials to suspend the Delray Beach International final in Delray Beach, Fla., until today.

•Justine Henin will not play for Belgium in the Fed Cup against the United States, joining Kim Clijsters on the sideline.

The United States and Belgium play the first round on April 21-22.

College football

BSU assistant leaves

The assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Boise State football team has resigned to return to coaching in the National Football League, the school announced.

Sean Kugler will help coach the offensive line for the Buffalo Bills. Before Boise State, Kugler spent five seasons coaching in the NFL with the Detroit Lions. A search has begun for Kugler’s replacement, the school said.

Germans win luge

Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch won the men’s doubles race in Igls, Austria, to capture Germany’s third gold medal at the luge world championships, with the United States finishing third. Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin of the United States, who were seventh after the first run, finished 0.215 off the pace.

In the women’s race, Tatjana Huefner led a top-four sweep for Germany.

•Ivo Rueegg piloted Switzerland to a gold medal in the four-man bobsled at the world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, with the United States finishing fourth.

Steven Holcomb, who had a thumb injury, piloted the U.S.

•Adam Malysz of Poland used a strong second leap at Titisee-Neustadt, Germany, to win his second World Cup ski jumping event in two days.

After tying the hill record with a leap of 145.0 meters Saturday, Malysz jumped 134.5 on his second attempt.

•Janne Korpi of Finland won a snowboarding World Cup big air event at Turin, Italy.

•Sven Kramer of the Netherlands won the 5,000-meter race at a speedskating World Cup event in Turin, Italy in 6 minutes, 18.31 seconds.

European champion Ireen Wust won the women’s 1,500 in 1:55.01.

Bell takes triple jump

Kenta Bell of the United States won the triple jump with a leap of 55 feet, 5 inches at the Flanders Indoor meet in Ghent, Belgium.

Bell beat Michael Velter of Belgium, who jumped 54-7 1/2.

Venelina Veneva of Bulgaria beat European champion Tia Hellebaut to win the high jump.

•Former welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga was released from prison in Managua, Nicaragua, pending a trial on fraud charges. He was arrested on Thursday and jailed after three people accused him of writing bad checks worth $87,000.

•Jose Carlos Bauer, a star midfielder for Brazil who played in the 1950 and 1954 World Cups, died in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 81.

•A record 450 horses have been nominated for the 2007 Triple Crown races, including 2-year-old champions Street Sense and Dreaming of Anna.
