Dukes helps Dons cool off Lions

Johnny Dukes scored a career-high 21 points and had eight rebounds in San Francisco’s 76-69 win over Loyola Marymount on Monday night in San Francisco.

Jay Watkins came off the bench to tie his career high with 17 points and Manny Quezada and Alan Wiggins added 14 apiece for the Dons, who moved within one game of second place in the West Coast Conference.

San Francisco led by as many as 16 after being held to 29 points in the first half but had to stave off a late charge by the streaking Lions, winners of four of five going in.

Loyola Marymount held the Dons to one basket over the final eight minutes and was within 69-64 with 1:48 remaining before San Francisco made seven free throws over the final 67 seconds to seal the win.

Marko Deric scored 16 points for Loyola Marymount.

Portland 55, Saint Mary’s 47: Ben Sullivan scored 15 points and Darren Cooper added 14 as the Pilots broke a four-game home losing streak with a win over the Gaels.

Sullivan gave Portland the lead for good with 6:43 left in the game, when he hit a difficult 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down. It was Portland’s only 3-pointer of the game, and it started a 15-6 closing run that gave the Pilots their biggest lead of the night when the buzzer sounded.

San Diego 97, Pepperdine 85: Ross DeRogatis scored 25 points and Nir Cohen added a career-high 24 points as the Toreros overcame a large first-half deficit to beat the Waves.

DeRogatis and Cohen led San Diego back as the Toreros went on a 34-16 to take a 40-35 halftime lead.

Marvin Lea scored 21 points for Pepperdine, which lost its fifth straight game.
