Mickelson tied for first at Riviera

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington spent Friday afternoon on opposite sides of Riviera as they played vastly different styles. All they had in common when the second round ended was a share of the lead at the Nissan Open in Los Angeles.

Mickelson made only one bogey and got hot with his irons on the back nine with back-to-back birdies inside 5 feet and a 3-wood from 287 yards that set up an eagle on the 17th hole, sending him to a 6-under-par 65 and a chance to win for the second straight week.

Harrington only made two pars on his first 10 holes, a round filled with brilliance and bogeys, until he finally settled down in the twilight hours off Sunset Boulevard to polish off a 68.

They were at 11-under 131, three shots clear of Charles Howell III, who shot 65.

“Anything in the 60s was really the goal today,” said Harrington, playing the Nissan Open for the first time. “I knew going out there I would be a little erratic. I’m still making mental errors here and there, so I put up with that.”

“I like the way I put the ball in play,” Mickelson said. “It feels easy.”

Pullman native Kirk Triplett was tied for 32nd at 2-under 70.

Champions Tour

David Eger shot a 4-under 67 in windy and cold conditions to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am on the TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Fla.

Tom Wargo opened with a 68, and Hay Haas, Wayne Levi and John Harris shot 69s on the chilly day when temperatures dipped into the low-40s.

LPGA Tour

Morgan Pressel moved one step closer to becoming the youngest player in the history of the tour to win a 54-hole tournament, shooting a 4-under 68 for a share of the second-round lead in the season-opening SBS Open at Kahuku, Hawaii.

The 18-year-old Pressel was tied with her 2002 Junior Solheim Cup captain, Sherri Steinhauer, and Paula Creamer at 7-under 137. Steinhauer and Creamer shot 70s.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., and Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum are tied for 20th at 1 under.
