Lightning strike Penguins, win in shootout
Martin St. Louis put a backhander between Marc-Andre Fleury’s pads in a shootout and the Tampa Bay Lightning shook off a remarkable goal by Sidney Crosby while skating on his stomach to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 Sunday night in Pittsburgh.
Fleury stopped Brad Richards and Vincent Lecavalier to start the shootout, but St. Louis skated down the slot and faked out Fleury by going to his backhand and then slipping the puck between the goalie’s legs. Crosby had a chance to send the shootout to another round but, like Eric Christensen and Evgeni Maklkin before him, couldn’t get the puck past Johan Holmqvist.
Holmqvist has stopped all 10 skaters he has faced in shootouts this season.
Canucks 4, Panthers 3 (SO): At Vancouver, British Columbia, Josh Green scored in a shootout to give Vancouver a victory over Florida.
The win extended Vancouver’s season-high winning streak to seven games while the Panthers dropped their third straight on the road.
Green beat Florida netminder Ed Belfour high to the stick side from 20 feet out for the game winner and then had to stand by and watch nervously as Canucks’ netminder Roberto Luongo stopped Jozef Stumpel at the other end to preserve the win.
Senators 6, Flyers 1: At Ottawa, Dany Heatley had two goals and an assist, and linemate Daniel Alfredsson added a goal and two assists in Ottawa’s victory over Philadelphia.
The third member of that line, Chris Kelly, had a goal and an assist to help the Senators win for the sixth time in their last eight games. Rookie Josh Hennessy added his first NHL goal, and Joe Corvo also scored.
Devils 3, Canadiens 0: At Montreal, Martin Brodeur made 28 saves for his NHL-leading seventh shutout of the season and Brian Gionta scored twice, lifting New Jersey to a win over Montreal.
Brodeur, who leads the league with 25 wins, is third in career shutouts with 87. He trails George Hainsworth (94) and Terry Sawchuck (103).
Ducks 4, Red Wings 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Bjorn Melin scored in his NHL debut and Anaheim also got goals from Travis Moen and Ryan Getzlaf to beat Detroit.
Ilya Bryzgalov, making his third consecutive start in net because of Jean-Sebastien Giguere’s groin injury, made 33 saves to help send Detroit to its third straight loss. Rob Niedermayer added an empty-net goal with 4.1 seconds left.
Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Holmstrom scored power-play goals for the Red Wings.
Coyotes 4, Blackhawks 2: At Chicago, Jeremy Roenick had a goal and an assist and Phoenix won its season-high sixth straight, with the victory over Chicago.
Michael Zigomanis, Fredrik Sjostrom and Oleg Saprykin also scored for Phoenix, which hasn’t lost in regulation in its last eight, going 7-0-1.
The Coyotes’ Mikael Tellqvist made 32 saves, including several on tough chances in the third period.
