Basketball this week
Have there been more significant injuries in any year prior to this in Greater Spokane League basketball? At least 18 key players have missed parts or all of the season this year among boys and girls teams combined because of a variety of “owies.”
The latest is springy U-Hi transfer post Nate Martin, who is out with a broken fibula. His rebounding was missed against Lewis and Clark on Tuesday and will be again tonight when the Titans play CV in the Stinky Sneaker spirit game at the Spokane Arena beginning at 5:30 p.m.
With the Titans and Bears (both 4-8) vying for a top-six GSL finish, their rivalry game is particularly significant. Ferris is at Rogers, Gonzaga Prep at North Central, Mt. Spokane at Shadle Park and Mead at EV in other boys and girls games.
The Great Northern League boys triad continues to square off with unbeaten Pullman (4-5, 3-0) hosting once-beaten Medical Lake Friday and traveling to unbeaten West Valley Saturday at 4:15 p.m. WV’s Eagles (6-2 overall, 3-0 in league) topped the ML Cardinals (5-4, 2-1) on Tuesday.
Other games of note: Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) handled Chewelah’s girls on Tuesday and are at Freeman on Friday, 5:45 p.m., in a game between NEA unbeatens. The unbeaten and top-ranked Northwest Christian boys (12-0, 8-0) separated itself from previously unbeaten Liberty (10-2, 7-1) in the Bi-County League with an easy win Tuesday.
