Dons top Waves to go 3-0 in WCC
Danny Cavic scored a career-high 19 points and Armondo Surratt added 18 as San Francisco beat Pepperdine 72-71 on Monday in Malibu, Calif.
Cavic had three steals, sank four 3-pointers and went 7 of 10 from the field. San Francisco’s Alan Wiggins Jr. tallied nine rebounds.
Late in the game, the Waves had a chance to tie at 70 but turned the ball over with 29 seconds left.
Surratt then sank two free throws to put the game away for the Dons (7-11, 3-0), who have opened conference play with three wins for the first time since 1991.
Chase Griffin, who hit a 3-point basket at the buzzer, and Tomas Pranciliauskas both had 12 points to lead Pepperdine (4-16, 0-4).
Santa Clara 57, Portland 41: At Santa Clara, Calif., John Bryant scored 13 points and matched his season-high with 12 rebounds in helping the Broncos (12-6, 2-1) beat the Pilots (6-14, 2-2).
Scott Dougherty added 12 points as Santa Clara rebounded from Saturday’s home loss to Gonzaga. The Broncos have won four of their last six. Mitch Henke had 10.
Jamie Jones had 12 points and nine rebounds for Portland, which is still looking for their first win away from home in 11 games. Chris Jackson added 10 points.
Portland was held to its season-low in points.
San Diego 78, Loyola Marymount 74: At Los Angeles, Ross DeRogatis scored 25 points and Brandon Johnson and Gyno Pomare added 19 apiece as the Toreros (12-6, 2-1) defeated the Lions (8-12, 0-4).
San Diego has won three straight and 10 of its last 12.
Loyola Marymount has dropped seven straight and is winless in the conference.
DeRogatis had six 3-pointers and six assists. Pomare, the conference leader in rebounds, led the Toreros with eight boards. Johnson, the conference leader in assists, dished out five assists.
Adoyah Miller tied a career-high in scoring and led the Lions with 23 points, including six 3-pointers. Damian Martin scored a career-high 18 points for LMU.
