AREA ROUNDUP: Bowman, Hawk pace Bulldogs

Freshman Heather Bowman scored eight of her 15 points over the final nine minutes to help Gonzaga hold off San Francisco 58-53 in San Francisco to remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play.

Stephanie Hawk led all players with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Bowman added eight rebounds and five assists for the Bulldogs (14-8, 6-0), who outrebounded the Dons 46-33. Gonzaga hit 22 of 30 free throws while San Francisco made four of only seven attempts.

The Dons (7-14, 1-5) opened a five-point lead midway through the second half before Hawk tallied six straight points to put the Bulldogs back in control.

Nykia Reace scored 14 points to lead the Dons.

Track and field

Idaho senior Russ Winger was named Western Athletic Conference men’s indoor track and field Athlete of the Week.

Winger won the shot put at the Washington State University Open last Saturday with a meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 63 feet, 5 ½ inches. Last Friday he finished second in the weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 65 feet, 1 ½ inches at the same meet.

Wrestling

Hinrich Barnes defeated Bo Gregson 8-5 (141 pounds) in a rematch of the Clackamas Open finals last weekend as North Idaho defeated visiting Simon Fraser 32-12 in a nonconference match.

Brandon Palaniuk and Kyle Sand earned the Cardinals’ only pins at 133 and 184 pounds, respectively.

Kicker John Koker will return to the Spokane Shock for the 2007 season.

In addition, the Shock added defensive back/linebacker Nygel Rogers to the roster.

Koker is the fourth member of the 2006 ArenaCup Champion Shock to return for the 2007 season. Last year he converted 78 percent of his point-after attempts and 44 percent of his field-goal attempts.

Rogers joins the Shock after spending time in training camp with the National Football League’s Washington Redskins (2005) and the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts (2006).

Folkstyle wrestling

The Washington State folkstyle wrestling championships are in Spokane Valley this weekend.

The two-day event Saturday and Sunday at University High begins at 10 a.m. both days. The tournament will attract roughly 1,000 wrestlers in eight age classifications from elementary through high school.

Folkstyle scoring follows collegiate/high school rules.

Gymnastics

The starting time for Saturday’s Greater Spokane League gymnastics all-league meet at Mead is 4 p.m., not 3 p.m. as originally listed in the GSL schedule.
