Battle for the Prairie Pig
Lakeland High School claimed the prized pork, while Post Falls High School won the war on the hardwood during the Battle for the Prairie Pig Jan. 18 at The Arena, Post Falls High School’s gymnasium.
Over the long haul, the Trojan girls were just too much for the Hawks, squeaking out a 48-45 win. In the second part of the twin bill, the taller, bigger Post Falls boys dominated Lakeland’s athleticism for an easy 68-47 victory.
However, the real winner was the community, with both schools raising funds for worthy causes. Through donations from students, faculty and area businesses, Post Falls High School raised more than $4,400 for the American Heart Association. Lakeland High raised more than $2,500 dollars, its funds divided between the Make-A-Wish Foundation and several local families in need.
Cheer squads from both schools entertained at halftime of the girls’ game. Then at the break in the boys’ game, lip-syncing troupes dressed as pigs, movie characters and even some in drag, wowed the crowd with humorous renditions of their favorite songs.
In the end, the Prairie Pig was taken home by the Lakeland Hawks, but judging by spirit of the competition, everyone involved in the evening are winners.
