While Barry Bonds is on the verge of becoming baseball’s home run king, his childhood buddy works in a San Francisco prison kitchen for 12 cents an hour.

And there is no end in sight for his personal trainer, Greg Anderson.

Anderson is being held in contempt of court for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating Bonds’ alleged perjury. He’s been there since November in this, his fourth and longest jail term connected to the federal government’s seemingly endless investigation of steroid use by Bonds and other elite athletes.

Anderson will remain federal inmate No. 93389-011 until he testifies under oath about Bonds’ alleged use of steroids, or until the term of the grand jury investigating the perjury allegations expires.

“Barry Bonds didn’t start for the third straight game, sitting out San Francisco’s loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Bonds is expected to get a chance to add to his 751 homers today against lefty Ted Lilly.

Reporter reprimanded

When a Japanese reporter recently asked Roger Clemens for an autograph, he got a signed photo and a swift penalty: His membership in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America was revoked.

Hiroki Homma of the Fuji Evening News said he didn’t realize he was breaking the rules.

Signs posted in big league dugouts and clubhouses remind reporters they’re not allowed to ask for autographs, and Major League Baseball’s policy regarding media access includes an explicit explanation.

Fines and suspensions

Detroit Tigers star Gary Sheffield was fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for recently criticizing umpires.

“Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee dropped his appeal and began serving a five-game suspension for his role in a June 16 brawl with the San Diego Padres.
