OSU coach donates kidney

Oregon State offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf (above, right) has donated a kidney to the wife of Mike Cavanaugh, the offensive line coach.

Laurie Cavanaugh, 48 (above, left), had living-donor kidney transplant surgery on Tuesday at Portland’s Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.

Laurie Cavanaugh has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, which enlarged her kidneys.

Langsdorf was identified as a match through tests with 18 individuals.

“When you work as closely as a coaching staff does, you develop some really deep and solid friendships – I guess you could say this is the ultimate in friendship,” said Mike Cavanaugh, who, like Langsdorf, is in his third season with the Beavers.

Minor leaguer’s streak reaches 38

Mitch Hilligoss of the Charleston RiverDogs extended his hitting streak to 38 games on Friday. Hilligoss’ streak is the longest in the minor leagues in at least 20 years, passing Joey Cora’s 37-game streak with Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League in 1989, according to minorleaguebaseball.com.

Reliable statistics have only been kept in the minor leagues for the past two decades.

Hilligoss, a 21-year-old third baseman for the New York Yankees’ Class A South Atlantic League affiliate, started his streak April 18.

Joe DiMaggio is thought to have the longest minor league hitting streak at 61 games when he played for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1939.

DiMaggio also holds the major league record with a 56-game hitting streak for the New York Yankees in 1941.
