People: What’s it mean? He’ll never sing

“The Sopranos” ended just the way it was supposed to, and he has no intention of discussing it further, series creator David Chase says.

“I have no interest in explaining, defending, reinterpreting, or adding to what is there,” Chase said in an exclusive interview with The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J.

“We did what we thought we had to do,” he added. “People get the impression that you’re trying to (mess) with them, and it’s not true. You’re trying to entertain them.”

Chase has been hiding, er, resting in France since Sunday’s final episode of the groundbreaking HBO series, which puzzlingly ended with mobster Tony Soprano and his family dining in a restaurant when the screen suddenly went black.

Some have theorized that meant Tony indeed was “whacked,” while others think Chase was merely leaving the door open for a “Sopranos” movie.

As for the latter, he said: “I never say never. An idea could pop into my head where I would go, ‘Wow, that would make a great movie,’ but I doubt it.”

They really believe that?

Among the most satisfied “Sopranos” watchers on Sunday were members of the ‘80s rock group Journey, whose power ballad “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” played on a jukebox during the final scene.

“It was better than anything I would have ever hoped for,” said the band’s keyboard player, Jonathan Cain.

“It puts our feet in the cement,” he added. “We’re a staple in the American music culture. Like us or not, we’re here to stay.”

Rather indiscreet

Former CBS anchorman Dan Rather has been busy creating his own controversy, accusing the network of “dumbing down” and “tarting up” its newscast with Katie Couric.

CBS CEO Leslie Moonves on Tuesday called Rather’s remarks “sexist,” adding about the ratings-challenged Couric: “She’s been on the air for nine months. Let’s give her a break.”

Not so keen on Keener

Actor Dermot Mulroney has filed for divorce from his actress wife of nearly 17 years, Catherine Keener.

The couple separated in May 2005. Mulroney is seeking joint custody of their 7-year-old son, Clyde.

You, too, ‘Sopranos’ fans

Kelly Clarkson may sing about love, but she says that she’s never actually been in it.

“I love my friends and family,” the original “American Idol” tells Elle magazine. “But I have never said the words ‘I love you’ to anyone in a romantic relationship. Ever.

“Love is something you work at,” the 25-year-old adds. “It doesn’t come easily.

“There are going to be bad days. You are going to have to work at loving someone when they are being an idiot.”
