Wildlife agents dwindle
“We’re worse off than I thought,” said Capt. Mike Whorton, calling last week to say he gave wrong figures to The Spokesman-Review for a May story about the declining number of state wildlife enforcement agents in Washington.
“I just got a new roster and it shows we have only 145 officers statewide, not 160.”
Only 18 commissioned officers work the state’s 10 easternmost counties, said Whorton, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Spokane region enforcement manager. That’s down from 23 two decades ago.
