Lagreid leads Cougars

Greg Lagreid had three hits to lead Washington State’s baseball team to a 17-7 win over Utah Valley State (2-7) in the Cougars’ home opener on the first day of the Banana Belt Tournament at Pullman.

The Cougars (4-3) broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Wolverines starter Dan Christensen retired the first two batters in the fourth before issuing four consecutive walks sandwiched between two wild pitches. Matt Fanelli also had a two-run single in the inning. WSU scored six more runs in the sixth, including Jared Prince’s two-run single.

Lagreid paced WSU with two RBIs and two runs. Winner Steve Kost (1-0) pitched two innings. Christensen allowed seven runs for UVSC.

“Josh Monroe pitched seven shutout innings as Gonzaga posted a 3-1 win over Air Force (4-8) during the opening day of the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston.

Monroe (1-0) allowed two hits while striking out nine. CJ McLure closed out the last two innings to record his second save for the Bulldogs (6-8). Michael Rhoddes scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Wells in the eighth.
