Cougs bounced by UCLA

Lindsey Pluimer scored 15 points and Noelle Quinn added 14 points as UCLA beat Washington State 72-58 in a first round loser-out game of the Pac-10 Conference tournament Friday at San Jose, Calif.

Marisa Stotler scored 14 points to lead the 10th-seeded Cougars (5-24), who have yet to win a conference tournament game in six tries.

Julie Benz, Washington State’s all-time leading rebounder with 899, also became the 11th Cougar to reach 1,000 points by making a pair of free throws with 5:27 remaining to play.

The seventh-seeded Bruins (14-17), who beat Stanford in last year’s championship game, opened an 18-point lead midway through the second half and held on for the double-digit victory. The Cougars never got closer than 10 points.

Quinn became the fifth Bruin to record more than 1,800 points. She also has 792 career rebounds and needs eight more to become the second Pac-10 player to score 1,800 points, grab 800 rebounds and record at least 400 assists.

UCLA will face No. 2 Arizona State at 1:15 p.m.

Washington State missed its first seven shots while UCLA was 1 for 8 to start. The teams combined for 25 turnovers in the first half.

Shaina Zaidi hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points to spark an 18-6 run that gave the Bruins a 35-24 halftime lead.

“Ninth-seeded Arizona defeated No. 8 Oregon State 69-54 in the other first round game. The Wildcats will face top-seeded Stanford at 5 p.m. today.
