Miller leads WSU to win
A couple of four-run innings sparked Washington State to an 11-6 non-league baseball win over Rider on Monday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Jeff Miller’s fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, highlighted a four-run first inning for the Cougars (9-6). Miller added an RBI ground out in a fourth-run seventh that gave WSU some breathing room.
Rider (2-6) had closed to within 6-5 with a five-run fourth that featured Jon Leise’s three-run home run.
Jared Prince went 3 for 4 and scored four runs with one RBI and Paul Gran was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI to spark the Cougars, who were outhit 11-9.
•Gonzaga’s scheduled game at Utah was canceled because of wet field conditions. A two-game series will be shortened to one game today.
•Whitworth junior Ryan Snell, who pitched a six-hit, 4-1 win over Lewis & Clark, striking out eight, is the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Track and field
Cody Stelzer of Whitworth, who high jumped 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches to finish sixth in the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships and become the school’s first indoor All-American, is the Northwest Conference men’s Field Athlete of the Week.
