Seahawks keep veteran Engram

The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed Bobby Engram to a multiyear contract even though they already have a stable of younger receivers in place.

Team president Tim Ruskell said Friday that experience and Engram’s rapport with wide receivers Darrell Jackson, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson were among the reasons the 34-year-old is coming back for a seventh season in Seattle.

Terms were not immediately available.

Santa Clara asks to talk to Grier

Santa Clara University has asked for permission to talk with longtime Gonzaga assistant Bill Grier about its vacant basketball coaching position.

The Associated Press reported that Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth confirmed that Santa Clara had asked permission to speak with Grier, an assistant at Gonzaga since 1992 and one of the architects of the Bulldogs’ success.

He has spent his entire college coaching career at Gonzaga.

Santa Clara reportedly forced longtime coach Dick Davey into retirement after this season, presumably to seek a coach who could close the gap with the Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference.

Grier has not returned calls made to him by The Spokesman-Review over the past three days.

Jets sign Tuiasosopo

The New York Jets signed free-agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo.

Tuiasosopo spent his first six NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders, who drafted him in the second round in 2001 out of the University of Washington.

He appeared in 11 games with the Raiders, including two starts, and completed 48 of 88 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns.

The athletic 28-year-old also rushed 15 times for 68 yards.

He’s expected to compete with second-year quarterback Kellen Clemens for the No. 2 job behind starter Chad Pennington.
