In brief: Fun run will benefit Sorensen school

The Spokesman-Review

A three-mile fun run Saturday will raise money for Sorensen Elementary School, proposed to become a specialized school for the arts and humanities this fall.

The $15 entry fee includes a T-shirt and bottle of water. The money will go to the school’s $100,000 fundraising goal.

Applications for enrollment have surpassed the two-year goal set when the Coeur d’Alene School Board approved the magnet school plan in February. School officials hoped to have 20 to 30 new students signed up by June and 100 students within two years.

As of Wednesday, there were 155 completed applications, not including those already enrolled.

“It’s going gangbusters,” Principal David Miller said. About 60 percent of those applications are from students new to the district. Not everyone will get in. Miller said some grades are very close to having waiting lists.

Fun run registration starts at 9 a.m. at the southwest corner of Coeur d’Alene City Park. The run starts at 10 a.m.

Police seek man wanted in assault

Coeur d’Alene police are looking for Jory J. Wickham, who is accused of hitting a man with a bottle and robbing him early Sunday. He then allegedly used the victim’s debit card to buy breakfast at Denny’s.

Wickham, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, is considered dangerous, according to a Coeur d’Alene police news release. He’s described as a 180-pound white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police think Wickham may be in Montana near Whitefish or Plains.

He is suspected of approaching Joel Olsen in a Lakeside Avenue parking area a few minutes after midnight on Sunday while Olsen was talking on a cell phone.

Olsen told police that Wickham hit him in the forehead with a glass bottle and took his wallet. Olsen was injured but sought no medical treatment.

Wickham allegedly used the stolen debit card to order a meal at Denny’s, then called a taxi for a ride to Post Falls before fleeing the scene. By then, the debit card had been reported stolen.

Anyone with information should call the Coeur d’Alene Police Department at (208) 769-2320 or the Tip Line at (208) 769-2296.

Rewards offered for tips in 2 cases

Secret Witness of Kootenai County is offering cash rewards for information in two cases, including the arrest of Robert James Matthews.

Matthews, 38, is wanted on a felony fugitive warrant issued by the Idaho Department of Correction. He was initially charged with trafficking by attempting to manufacture a controlled substance.

He’s described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 180 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Matthews is known to abuse drugs and have violent tendencies, authorities said.

In the other case, Secret Witness reports that someone stole an ATM machine from the HICO Station at the corner of Hayden Avenue and Ramsey Road and used a stolen van to get away on Wednesday about 3 a.m.

The van was later found near the Post Falls Police Department.

A witness reported hearing a loud crash at the HICO and seeing a white van with a blue stripe backed up to the building. The witness saw the silhouette of a person pushing the ATM into the back of the van. It appears the suspect used the van to pull the ATM from its location, which resulted in substantial damage to the entrance of the store.

Anyone with information on either case should call Secret Witness of Kootenai County at (208) 667-2111. Callers are asked to provide a code name or number and do not have to provide their own name to be eligible for the cash rewards.

Washtucna woman injured in collision

A collision near Washtucna, Wash., left two vehicles totaled and a 90-year-old woman in serious condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center on Wednesday.

Bonnie J. Hamill of Washtucna was driving a 1994 Honda Accord west on state Highway 26 when she turned in front of a 1995 Mitsubishi Montero SUV headed in the opposite direction, the Washington State Patrol said.

The crash sent the Honda into the opposite lane, and the Mitsubishi rolled and came to rest on its side, next to the roadway, troopers said. The collision occurred near the intersection with state Highway 261.

The 24-year-old driver of the SUV, Tina M. Zitlau, of Boise, was injured but refused aid at the scene, troopers said.

The crash is still under investigation.
