NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Dodge Avenger 500

Site: Darlington, S.C. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 3 p.m.; Saturday, race (FOX, 7 p.m.). Track: Darlington Raceway (egg-shaped oval, 1.366 miles, 25 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 23 degrees in turns 3-4). Race distance: 501 miles, 367 laps. Last race: Jimmie Johnson gave Hendrick Motorsports its seventh win in the past eight Cup races by leading teammate Kyle Busch to a 1-2 finish Sunday at Richmond International Raceway. It was the third consecutive victory for Hendrick, which remained undefeated in the four races in which NASCAR has used its new Car of Tomorrow. Last year: Greg Biffle held off a late charge from Jeff Gordon to win at Darlington Raceway. Fast facts: Johnson’s victory pulled him into second place in the standings, where he now trails Jeff Gordon by 211 points. … This will be the fifth COT event. The first four featured margins of victory of less than 1 second. … Joe Gibbs Racing cars have led 794 of the 1,716 laps run in the four COT races. Hendrick cars have led 549 of those laps. … Biffle will try to join Gordon and Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers to win three consecutive events at Darlington. He is one of five active drivers with multiple victories at the track. … Jeff Burton won both Darlington events in 1999 and has eight top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in 24 career starts at the track. He is expected to make his 450th career start this weekend. Next race: NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge, May 19, Concord, N.C.

NASCAR BUSCH

Diamond Hill Plywood 200

Site: Darlington, S.C. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 5 p.m., race (ESPN2, 8 p.m.). Track: Darlington Raceway (egg-shaped oval, 1.366 miles, 25 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 23 degrees in turns 3-4). Race distance: 200.8 miles, 147 laps. Last race: Clint Bowyer won the race off pit road with about 28 laps to go at Richmond and easily went on to his fifth career Busch victory. Last year: Denny Hamlin won the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 for his second victory of 2006. Fast facts: Mark Martin has a series-best eight wins and eight poles at Darlington. … Jason Keller is returning to the series this weekend with CJM Racing. Keller is Busch’s all-time earnings leader with more than $10 million and one of only two drivers with 400 starts. … Matt Kenseth was second in last year’s race after winning the year before. … David Ragan leads Juan Pablo Montoya by one point in the rookie standings. Next race: Carquest Autoparts 300, May 26, Concord, N.C.

FORMULA ONE

Spanish Grand Prix

Site: Barcelona. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 8 a.m.); Sunday, race (Speed Channel, 7:30 a.m.). Track: Circuit of Catalunya (road course, 2.937 miles). Race distance: 193.842 miles, 66 laps. Last race: Felipe Massa of Ferrari won the Bahrain Grand Prix on April 15. Lewis Hamilton of McLaren finished second, becoming the first driver to start his F1 career with three straight top-three finishes. Last year: Fernando Alonso became the first Spaniard to win the Spanish Grand Prix, capturing the race in front of King Juan Carlos and more than 115,000 fans. Michael Schumacher was second, followed by Giancarlo Fisichella and Massa. Fast facts: Hamilton, double world champion Alonso and Michael Schumacher replacement Kimi Raikkonen all have 22 points after three races. Alonso and Raikkonen are technically ahead, with each having a victory. … Juan Pablo Montoya had an embarrassing moment during the 2002 event when he pulled away from the pits with the fuel hose still attached to his car. His team’s lollipop man, Carl Gaden, got his foot run over when he tried to stop Montoya by jumping in front of the car. Next race: Monaco Grand Prix, May 27, Monte Carlo.

NHRA

Last event: Melanie Troxel beat Cory McClenathan in the Top Fuel finals to become the second woman to win at Gateway International Raceway. Ron Capps extended his lead in the Funny Car points to 121 with his third victory of the year, Dave Connolly topped teammate Jeg Coughlin by 0.016 seconds to move into second place overall in Pro Stock, and Matt Smith used a national-record elapsed time of 6.901 seconds to earn the Pro stock Motorcycle championship. Next event: Thunder Valley Nationals, May 20, Bristol, Tenn.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Erik Darnell picked up his first career truck series victory at Kansas Speedway, dominating the race and snapping Mike Skinner’s string of wins at three. A victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 would have given Skinner — who also won three straight races in 1996 — the series record. Instead, the points leader finished fifth. Next race: Quaker Steak and Lube 200, May 18, Concord, N.C.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Sebastien Bourdais raced to his second Grand Prix of Houston victory on April 22 and grabbed the inside track for his fourth consecutive Champ Car title. Rookie Graham Rahal, Bourdais’ teammate, finished second. The 18-year-old Rahal, who skipped his senior prom in Ohio to race in Houston, became the youngest driver in series history to earn a top-three finish. Next race: G.I. Joe’s Grand Prix, June 10, Portland, Ore.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Dan Wheldon, a close runner-up in his two previous races at Kansas Speedway, was 10 seconds ahead of Dario Franchitti late in the Kansas Lottery Indy 300 and won under caution when Ed Carpenter crashed with two laps to go. It was Wheldon’s second victory in four races this year, along with the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Next race: Indianapolis 500, May 27.
