Prep roundup: Bengals oust Trojans

Josh Richardson pitched a complete-game one-hitter, leading Lewiston to a 3-1 win over Post Falls Thursday in a 5A Region I baseball loser-out tournament game in Lewiston.

Matt Martin hit a two-run single in the Bengals’ three-run third inning.

Lewiston (22-5) hosts Centennial at 1 p.m. Saturday for a state berth. The Trojans (10-17) ended their season.

Softball

Alysha Schanilec went 5 for 5 with four RBIs as Priest River routed Bonners Ferry 24-1 (0-16) in a 3A District I loser-out playoff game at Spirit Lake. The Spartans (7-14) advance to play tournament host Timberlake (18-6) today at 5:30 p.m. The Badgers’ season has concluded.

“Lauren Mandler pitched a complete-game three-hitter, helping fourth-seeded Central Valley top fifth-seeded Gonzaga Prep 4-1 in a District 8 4A tournament game at Diana Marks Field at Whitworth. The Bears’ Emily Anderson hit a two-run single in the second to put CV (14-7) on top 3-0. CV advances to play top-seeded Shadle Park (20-0) at 5 p.m. today at Whitworth while the Bullpups (8-13) are finished for the season.

Boys track and field

Lake City’s Nic Cotton won the 3,200-meter run by more than 10 seconds and the Timberwolves lead after the first day at the 5A regional meet at the Volmer Bowl in Lewiston. Cotton finished the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 51.78 seconds, crossing more than 10 seconds ahead of teammate Cody Helbling. Lewiston stands in second, followed by Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls. The two-day meet ends today.

“Moscow’s Paul Morgan won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 9 inches and took second in the discus (137-1) as the Bears lead the 4A regional meet at the Volmer Bowl in Lewiston after the first day of competition. Sandpoint is in second, followed by Lakeland.

Girls track and field

Lake City’s Brenna Lawson broke her school record by 3 inches after placing first in the pole vault (11-6) at the 5A regional meet at the Volmer Bowl in Lewiston. Lewiston is in the lead after the first day while LC’s Timberwolves are tied with Coeur d’Alene for second place. The two-day meet concludes today.

“Sandpoint’s Megan Bartlett (12:13.03) and Kathleen Vardell (12:31.35) finished 1-2 in the 3,200 and the Bulldogs lead after the first day at the 4A regional meet at Volmer Bowl in Lewiston. Lakeland is in second place, followed by Moscow.

Golf

Wallace’s Dayne Evenson and Dustin Christensen earned medalist honors after shooting 75s and leading the Miners to a first-place finish at 336 at the 2A/1A District tournament at Bryden Canyon Golf Course in Lewiston. Lapwai finished second.

For the girls, Wallace’s Cara Hayman earned medalist honors after shooting an 87 and leading the Miners to a win. Wallace shot a 449, followed by Orofino (475).

Boys soccer

Adam Zakrezeski and Mitch Weller scored two goals apiece as Cheney blanked Riverside 6-0 in a District 7 2A loser-out tournament game in Cheney. Caleb Johnson and Ben Igbinoba added goals for the Blackhawks (18-0), who outshot the Rams (8-8) 16-4. … In other tournament action, an own goal in the 54th minute gave Pullman a 3-1 lead and the Greyhounds held on to beat Deer Park (8-9) 3-2 in Pullman. Kyle Kinard and Derek Heim scored goals for Pullman (14-3), which advances to meet Cheney at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gonzaga Prep to determine the top two seeds to the state tournament, which starts Tuesday.
