Alvin Lowry is celebrating his 103rd birthday today. He was born May 18, 1904, in Marshall County, S.D., and has been a resident of Eastern Washington for approximately 58 years.

Lowry met his first wife, Bernice, in high school, and they were married from 1927 to 1979.

In 1984 he met his second wife, Zelpha, while doing volunteer work at Southwest Indian School in Peoria, Ariz. They are still married today.

Lowry worked as a manager for the southern division of the public utility district in Okanogan County. He says that his most rewarding life achievement was being mayor of Brewster, Wash., for several years.

Lowry attributes working hard, healthy eating and exercising to living a long and healthy life. He says a good sense of humor helps, too.

When asked what his most memorable moment was, Lowry said the Great Depression left him with the strongest memories.

Lowry has four children: Leah Bennett, Spokane; Phil Lowry, Fife, Wash.; Steve Lowry, Colbert; and Marilyn Cook, Mesa, Ariz. He has 13 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
