Motocross knows no bounds for oldtimers group

Your assistance may be necessary this weekend at Airway Heights where Extreme Motocross is hosting Round Six of the International Oldtimers Motocross Association Championship.
“The Oldtimers association is made up of 12 clubs representing all areas west of Colorado,” explained spokesman Kyle Montgomery.
Clubs are made up of older motocross enthusiasts (age 40 and older) that enjoy competition and like to race against their own age groups.
“Most local racing only has classes for those only up to 40 years old,” Montgomery said. “For those older, it is either race against those younger or stay at home.”
“The Oldtimer age groups range from the 30s to the 70s and even 80-year-olds,” Montgomery said.
Each of these groups is divided into classes based on skill level.
So that no one gets left out, Oldtimer events usually feature a support group race for all those younger than 30.
Those classes are novice (or beginner), amateur, expert and master. The master class has the highest-skilled riders while fastest class is usually made up of old pros. This pits riders of equal skill levels against each other, giving some close racing competition.
The events are open to all those who enjoy riding and racing dirt bikes, but you must be a member of a club to race. Memberships are available at the race for $25 and are good for all of the other races across the West.
Montgomery warned potential riders that races are timed events not just a number of laps.
“So do your exercises and get yourself in some shape as you will get a workout,” he said. “And we do want to see everyone go home safe and healthy. … Any size bike may be raced. Most prefer to race the modern MX machines. Some do race vintage machines with success.”
Winged Sprints will try again
Mother Nature just must be a fan of full-bodied stock cars and not open-wheel racing.
For the second week in a row, Stateline Speedway will be hosting an open-wheel class that previously had an event rained out. The Northwest Modifieds ran their first Stateline race last week.
Saturday’s delayed debut of the Mission Foods Inland Northwest Sprint Car Association (INSCA), makes up for the opener that was canceled May 12.
As promised, the revived class has drawn interest from across the region. Many-time NSRA champion “Quick Rick” Brown towed in from Roseburg, Ore., and promptly set a track qualifying record with a blistering 12.1-second lap around the quarter-mile. Brown also put on a great show during the A trophy dash, chasing the race winner, Ephrata’s Kevin Burke, but ultimately finishing second.
Then the rains came, dousing the racing surface but not the enthusiasm of president Ron Turner.
“Even with the inclement weather of the first race we had a strong group of cars’” Turner said. “With $1,000 to win this weekend should draw some more high-caliber race teams from around the Northwest.”
Along with the sprint cars, Stateline hosts a traveling Outlaw Compact class and Street Stocks for a 6 p.m. start.
Road racing bikes hit SRP
The Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association will have the stage all to itself Saturday and Sunday at Spokane Raceway Park as the Seattle-based group presents one of three events.
Motorcycles capable of reaching speeds of 180 mph at the end of the drag strip run a variety of classes in racing that starts early in the morning. For the first time, they will not have to clear out early to accommodate SRP’s drag racers.
“This is one of weekend’s we decided to close the drag strip and let our racers do something else over the holiday,” said track general manager J.R. Tice.
The oval track is also not operating this weekend.
