Prep roundup; WV edges Mt. Spokane
Brittany Franks scored the winning goal at 53 minutes Wednesday as West Valley (Yakima) rallied for a 2-1 win at Mt. Spokane in 3A girls soccer regional play.
The Wildcats (10-4-1) led 1-0 at halftime on Averi Hallman’s goal at 32 minutes that was assisted by Tiara Pittman. The Rams (19-0) tied the match at 43 minutes on Haley Curtis’ goal.
Callie Bergstrom made six saves for Mt. Spokane, which was limited to six shots on goal.
Mt. Spokane had won seven consecutive matches, outscoring rivals 26-1. WV has dominated most teams this year, posting 12 shutouts and never allowing more than one goal in a match.
Both teams had already qualified for the 16-team State 3A tournament. WV will host regional third seed Southridge, which eliminated Kamiakin 3-1 on Wednesday.
Mt. Spokane will host the No. 4 seed from District 3/4. Both matches must be played before Wednesday.
Volleyball
Luryn Abrahamson had a match-high 14 kills as West Valley qualified for state with a 25-17, 14-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11 win over Colville in District 7 2A play at WV. Alyssa Wold added 42 assists and seven blocks for the Eagles, who will meet Pullman at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cheney for the district championship. Emilee Lepp totaled 12 kills and 18 digs for the Indians. Colville will play Riverside at noon Saturday at Cheney for the district’s third and final berth to state. … Earlier at WV, Emily Pond finished with 12 kills and two blocks, and Jordan Emmil had 17 assists as Colville posted a 3-0 win that eliminated Medical Lake. … At Pullman, Danielle and Whitney Hodge combined for 18 kills as the host Greyhounds qualified for state with a 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 win over Riverside. Kerri Spangenberg added 31 assists and four aces for Pullman. Elizabeth McKinney had seven digs for the Rams. … Earlier at Pullman, Joni Nagy totaled seven kills and six aces as Riverside notched a 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23 win that eliminated Deer Park. Ariana Obert had 13 kills, six aces and 20 digs for the Stags. … The 16-team State 2A tournament is Nov. 8-9 at Kennewick’s Toyota Center. Pullman won the title in 2005.
