3 things to watch

The Spokesman-Review

1

Can the Cougars run? Last week WSU took advantage of UCLA’s aggressiveness to the tune of 274 rushing yards. There is the possibility the same thing could happen today, but only if the Cougars find a way to replace the injured Dwight Tardy. The holes may be available, but WSU might choose not to take advantage, looking to throw more often than against the Bruins.

2

Don’t let Jackson beat you: DeSean Jackson is not only one of the most dynamic receivers in the nation – the plan for every team that plays Cal is to double-team him – but he’s also one of the most dangerous punt returners. No one in the Pac-10 has kicked to him, preferring to drive the ball out of bounds.

3

The wall of fame: WSU coach Bill Doba can’t stop raving about the quickness of Cal’s offensive line. If Alex Mack and his agile linemates can neutralize WSU’s pressure package, the Cougars’ defense is in trouble. If WSU successfully takes advantage of Cal’s penchant to slide protection to the strong side by bringing a blitzer free off the weakside edge, the Bears’ quarterback is in trouble.
