Maddux headlines winners
San Diego Padres pitcher Greg Maddux won his record 17th Gold Glove on Tuesday while Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis earned his first award for fielding excellence.
Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez won for the 13th time and outfielders Andruw Jones, Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter added to their totals.
Maddux broke a tie with Baltimore third baseman Brooks Robinson and pitcher Jim Kaat for the most Gold Gloves.
Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco was among 10 first-time winners.
Rodriguez extended his record for catchers. Jones won his 10th award, while Ichiro won his seventh in a row.
Among the other A.L. winners: Minnesota pitcher Johan Santana, Los Angeles Angels shortstop Orlando Cabrera, Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre and Cleveland outfielder Grady Sizemore.
Other N.L. winners were: Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee, Arizona second baseman Orlando Hudson, Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins, third baseman David Wright and outfielder Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets, Aaron Rowand of Philadelphia and Jeff Francoeur of Atlanta. Rowand and Francoeur tied in the voting.
Guillen bought HGH
Free-agent outfielder Jose Guillen, who played for Seattle last season, bought nearly $20,000 worth of steroids and human growth hormone from 2003-05, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Former major leaguers Matt Williams and Ismael Valdez also purchased performance-enhancing drugs in 2002 according to the report.
Perlozzo joins M’s
Sam Perlozzo returned to the Seattle Mariners as third base coach, completing manager John McLaren’s revamped staff.
Perlozzo, fired as manager of the Baltimore Orioles in June, is best known in Seattle for waving home Ken Griffey Jr. from first base on a double by Edgar Martinez that won Game 5 of the 1995 division series against the Yankees, the Mariners’ first playoff-series victory.

Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox finalized an $8 million, one-year contract. … Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, 32, filed for free agency. Kuroda was 12-8 with a 3.56 ERA in 26 starts this season for the Hiroshima Carp. He is 103-89 with a 3.69 ERA in 11 seasons, all with Hiroshima. … Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman broke a bone in his left wrist while swinging a bat last weekend and is scheduled to have surgery today. He is expected to be ready for spring training. … Pitcher Paul Byrd had his $7.5 million club option for 2008 picked up by the Cleveland Indians. … The Orioles rounded out manager Dave Trembley’s coaching staff, hiring Dave Jauss as bench coach. Jauss, 50, served as bench coach for the Dodgers from 2006-07. … The Florida Marlins have agreed to accept the Orange Bowl as a site for a new ballpark if a financial deal can be worked out, acceding to the wishes of county and city officials. … The Mets re-signed utility man Marlon Anderson to a $2.2 million, two-year deal.
